        To summarize, the Dead Marshes spread across the Dagorlad plain, north of Mordor, on the eastern shore of the Anduin.
Their name comes from the battle that was fought there on Dagorlad, in which great armies met: the people and elves of the Last Alliance fought against Sauron's forces. After the battle, the corpses of elves and people were buried on the plain, then flooded. That's how the title Dead Marshes were created.

        In the one of the chapter of Two Towers entitled Through the marshes, a route of hobbit wandering: Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee, led by Gollum.
The Hobbits saw the dead underwater and vicious flames hovering over the swamps, which Gollum called the "candles of the dead."
        Those who succumb to the fire and try to reach the dead bodies can fall into the swamps "and join the dead and light their candles."
Frodo would meet such a fate, if not help by Sam.

Dziś powrót na Martwe Bagna wraz z Gollumem, Frodem i Samem.
W POPRZEDNIEJ Części mogliście dowiedzieć się nieco o samej historii tej krainy, skąd wzięła swoją nazwę, oraz jakie wydarzenie przyczyniło się do pojawiania się w tym miejscu swoistych... mieszkańców.

        Streszczając, Martwe Bagna rozpościerały się na równinie Dagorlad, na północ od Mordoru, na wschodnim brzegu Anduiny.
Ich nazwa pochodzi od rozegranej tam bitwy na Dagorlad, w której spotkały się wielkie armie: ludzie i elfowie z Ostatniego Sojuszu walczący przeciw siłom Saurona. Po bitwie zwłoki elfów i ludzi pogrzebano na terenie równiny, która następnie została pochłonięta przez wodę. Tak utworzyły się tytułowe Martwe Bagna.

       W rozdziale Dwóch Wież pt. Przez moczary, biegła tamtędy trasa wędrówki hobbitów: Frodo Bagginsa i Samwise’a Gamgee, prowadzonych przez Golluma.
Hobbici widzieli umarłych pod wodą oraz błędne ogniki unoszące się nad bagnami, nazwane przez Golluma „świecami umarłych”.
       Ci, którzy ulegną ognikom i będą próbowali dosięgnąć martwych ciał, mogą wpaść w bagna „i przyłączyć się do umarłych, i zapalić swoje świeczki”.

Taki los spotkałby Froda, gdyby w porę nie ocucić go Sam.
