Legnica 1241: 13th century Duchy of Silesia Knight #1 (Styriwar)

Hello friends!

Today I invite you to see a painted figurine - a variation on the theme of a knight from the Silesian Piast dynasty from the mid-13th century.

Perhaps he participated in the lost battle against the Mongols in 1241 near Legnica (Poland)?

Miniature from STYRIWAR.

The Battle of Legnica that took place on April 9, 1241, during the first Mongol invasion of Poland, between the knights of Lower and Upper Silesia, Lesser and Greater Poland, numbering about 6 thousand warriors, and foreign reinforcements, including Moravian and German reinforcements, numbering about 2 thousand armed men (also Teutonic Knights, Hospitallers, Templars), and the Mongols (Tatars), numbering from 3 thousand to 8 thousand warriors.

The Christian forces were defeated – their commander, Henry II the Pious, Duke of Silesia, Kraków, and Greater Poland, was killed, as were two commanders of the regiments: Bolesław Dypoldowic of the foreigner and Sulisław of Lesser Poland.

As a result of the Mongol invasion and this battle, the state of the Silesian Henrys fell apart. The unification of the provincial principalities was stalled for several decades.

Miniature from the 14th-century Legend of Saint Jadwiga.
