SAGA: Varangian Guards in full Armour #1

Therefore, the first four Vikings on duty in Byzantium, Varangian Guards.

A bit of history:
Varangian Guard was an elite unit in the Byzantine Empire from the 10  to the 14 century.
Main were hired with the Scandinavians. The Vikings were very respected warriors for his courage and bravery.
Varangians hired to the Byzantine army for most of the period of his travels, though at first they were usually minor earls single team.

Co prawda miałem dokończyć malować oddział greckich Hoplitów, ale wysłannicy Czarnego Kruka ostatnio zawładnęli moją głową.

W związku z tym, pierwsza czwórka wikingów na służbie w Bizancjum, czyli Wareska Straż.

Formacje tą miałem już okazję malować na DwarfCrypt, tyle że w strojach paradnych.

Tym razem Wikingowie z Crusader Miniatures prezentują się w pełnym rynsztunku bojowym.

Trochę historii:

Gwardia Wareska była elitarną jednostką w Cesarstwie bizantyjskim od wieku X do XIV. Najmowani byli główne ze Skandynawów. Wikingowie byli bardzo cenionymi wojownikami za swą odwagę oraz waleczność.
Waregowie najmowali się do armii bizantyńskiej przez większość okresu swoich podróży, choć początkowo zwykle były to pojedyncze drużyny pomniejszych jarlów. Już w 911 roku mają oni walczyć po stronie greckiej, nie, jak dotąd, przeciwko niej, służąc wraz z Dalmatyńczykami w marynarce podczas wyprawy na Kretę. Mieli oni brać udział również w wyprawie na Longobardów do Włoch w 936 r. oraz w walkach w Syrii z Arabami w 955 r. Znani byli oni wówczas jako wspaniała kompania (gr. Μεγάλη ‘Εταιρεία).

Funkcje bizantyńskiej gwardii wareskiej były podobne jak huskarlów i hirdu w Skandynawii oraz drużyny w państwach słowiańskich - przede wszystkim stanowili oni straż przyboczną władcy, bądź wyznaczonych przez niego urzędników i dowódców. W późniejszym okresie brali oni udział w wojnach w południowych Włoszech, gdzie toczyli walki z Longobardami oraz Normanami.
Mimo pewnej pogardy ze strony wyższych klas społecznych, gwardia pozostawała jedną z najbardziej prestiżowych i cenionych formacji w armii Bizancjum.
Gwardia wykazała się brutalnością, ale i skutecznością - podczas bohaterskiej obrony Konstantynopola w czasach czwartej krucjaty.
